What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Apnea is defined as the absence of breath.  So, sleep apnea is the absence of breath while sleeping.  Specifically, if breathing stops for greater than 10 seconds, then an episode of sleep apnea has occurred.  The number of apneic episodes in a night can help to determine the severity of a person's sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea has a number of signs and symptoms, including, but not limited to:

Daytime sleepiness

Restless sleep

Morning headaches

Irritability

Anxiety/Depression

Decreased concentration

Frequent sore throats

Sexual dysfunction

Sleep Apnea is also linked to several chronic medical conditions, including:

High Blood Pressure

Obesity

Diabetes

Heart Disease

These medical conditions can lead to heart attack, stroke, and death.  The life span of a person with untreated sleep apnea is significantly less than that of an individual who either doesn't have it, or has been treated for it.

See what it feels like . . .

For a moment, instead of taking normal breaths, pretend to snore every time you inhale.  Just push you tongue back against your throat, and breathe through your mouth.

Did you do it?

How do you feel?

Now push you tongue back further, so that the air can barely pass through  (you might not want to do that for a full minute).   Now imagine doing that for several hours night after night.

Understandably, sleep apnea has a ton of health ramifications!
